HM commander killed in Kupwara encounter

SRINAGAR, Jun 28: A commander of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) was killed in a fierce encounter with security forces in the frontier district of Kupwara, official sources said here today. Acting on a tip-off about the presence of militants, security forces and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police launched a joint at Nagri Drugmulla in the frontier district of Kupwara.
Official sources here tonight said following specific information about presence of militants in the woods near Warnow village in Kupwara, a joint search operation was launched by Army and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police.
However, when security forces were moving towards a particular area, militants hiding there fired at them with automatic weapons indiscriminately. The security forces also retaliated ensuing in an encounter, they said, adding in the initiate exchange of fire a militant was killed.
The operation was still going on when the reports last came in, they said, adding additional security forces have been rushed to further cordon off the area to foil any attempts by militants to escape.
The locals immediately took to the streets protesting against the killing of militant. Raising “pro freedom” slogans, the demonstrators pelted stones on security forces. Additional security forces have been rushed to the area, the sources added.
Wani, a resident of Sopore town in neighbouring Baramulla district, was a 'divisional commander' of the Hizbul Mujahideen.
One AK rifle and some ammunition were recovered from the encounter site, the official added.
Meanwhile, a mob in Sopore town set ablaze a police vehicle which was on its way from Bandipora to Kupwara to take a detenue for a court appearance.
As soon as news of Wani's death reached Sopore, a group of youth started pelting stones on passing vehicles including the police vehicle which was on way to Kupwara, a police official said.
He said the mob got hold of the vehicle and set it ablaze.
"The eight policemen and the detenue managed to escape from the spot and took refuge in a civilian house," he added.
The trapped policemen and the detenue were later safely rescued from the house, the official said.
