Domestic airlines shows 17 percent growth in number of passengers

New Delhi: Indian domestic airlines for the first time carried over one crore passengers in a month in May as the number of fliers rose by over 17% this year so far.
The report by Directorate General of Civil Aviation showed that domestic airlines carried 101.74 lakh or 1.01 crore passengers in May as against 86.69 lakh passengers same period last year, clocking a growth of 17.36%.
Overall this year till May, the sector saw a growth of 17.63% compared to first five months of 2016, carrying 465.87 lakh passengers as against 396.04 lakh.
The growth in numbers is attributed to the tourist season and almost all airlines had shown a rise in seat occupancy in May.
Except for AirAsia India and Zoom Air, all airlines recorded an increase in passenger load factor. SpiceJet continued to be the leader in this group with 94.3% as against 93.4% in April and 91.4% in March.
AirAsia India, which was second for March and April, dropped to the fourth position -- 89.4% instead of 90.1% in April.
No-frills carrier GoAir had a leap in seat occupancy -- from 84.7% to 93% -- while IndiGo to improved its tally from 86.9% to 91.1%. National carrier Air India had a seat occupancy of 80.9% compared to 78.7%. The overall cancellation rate for May has been 0.33%, down from April's 0.43%. It was 0.41% in March, 0.39% in February and 1.10% in January.
Last month, 716 passenger related complaints had been received by domestic airlines. The number of complaints per 10,000 passengers carried has been around 0.70. During April, 643 passenger related complaints had been received by the airlines as against 680 in March. The number of complaints per 10,000 passengers carried for the month of April 2017 has been around 0.70.
IndiGo continued to be on the top by cornering 41.2% as against 41.4% in April and 39.9% in March. It carried 41.91 lakh passengers last month.
Jet Airways and its subsidiary JetLite had a share of 17.6%, same as in April, while Air India got 13% and SpiceJet 12.6%. Both Air India and SpiceJet cornered 12.9% each market share in April.
