SRINAGAR, Aug 14: Authorities today imposed restrictions in parts of Srinagar to maintain law and order in the wake of killing of two civilians in security forces’ action on stone-pelting protestors.
Restrictions have been imposed in five police station areas of the city here, a police official said.
He said the curbs have been enforced in the police station areas of Nowhatta, Rainawari, Khanyar, M R Gunj and Safakadal.
The official said the restrictions were imposed as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order in the wake of killing of two civilians in south Kashmir yesterday.
Two youth Owais Shafi and Mohammad Sayeed Bhat were killed in security forces’ action on mobs of stone-pelting youth in Pulwama and Shopian districts respectively.
22-year-old Shafi sustained multiple pellet injuries at Kakapora in Pulwama and was referred to SMHS here for treatment, where he was declared ‘dead on arrival’ by the doctors yesterday.
Bhat (25) received bullet injury near the encounter site at Avneera in Shopian and was taken to a hospital where he succumbed late last night.
Three militants were killed in the encounter with security forces.
Educational institutions, including schools, colleges and universities, have been closed for the day in the Valley in view of the prevailing situation.
The Kashmir University and the Islamic University of Sciences and Technology have also postponed the examinations scheduled for today, while the class work has been suspended.
However, train service remained suspended for the third day today for security reasons in south Kashmir, while no train will chug in north Kashmir.
All train runs between Badgam-Srinagar in the central Kashmir to Anantnag-Qazigund in south to Banihal in Jammu region remained suspended for the third day, a senior railway official told this morning.
No train will run on this route, he said adding this decision was taken after a fresh advisory was received from authorities and police last night. Train service will be resumed only after receiving green signal from the authorities.
He also said train service between Srinagar-Badgam in central Kashmir to Baramulla in north Kashmir has also been suspended for security reasons. Train service was suspended on August 12 in the Kashmir valley for security reasons following strike called by both the factions of the Hurriyat Conference (HC) and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), spearheading the agitation, demanding right to self determination in protest against alleged attempts to abrogate Article 35-A of the constitution. However, it was resumed on Srinagar-Baramulla track yesterday.
During the past about two months train service has been suspended frequently for security reasons in the valley, where train property had suffered damage due to demonstration.
Last year train service remained suspended for about six months due to summer unrest in the valley. However, daily travelers are the most affected due to suspension of train service which is now being considered most trusted, cheap and fast.
Meanwhile, One person was killed in south Kashmir's Shopian district during security forces' action on a mob of stone pelters who were protesting after an encounter in which three militants were killed yesterday, police said.
Mohammad Sayeed Bhat (25) received bullet injuries when security forces used fire to chase away the mob near the encounter site at Avneera in Shopian last night, a police official said.
He said Bhat was taken to a hospital where he succumbed.
The official said 12 other persons were injured in the clashes.
