JU organizes XIIth Prof. S.C. Dube Memorial Lecture

Jammu Oct 13: The Department of Sociology, University of Jammu, today organized XIIth Prof. S.C. Dube Memorial lecture on '"Ethnography and Public Policy in India: History, Politics and Contemporary Concerns". Prof. S.M Patnaik, Professor of Anthropology, University of Delhi, presently Vice Chancellor, Utkal University, Odisha delivered the lecture and Prof. Keshav Sharma, Dean Academic Affairs, University of Jammu presided over the function.
Earlier, Dr. Vishav Raksha, Head, Department of Sociology, University of Jammu extended a warm welcome to the speaker and the invitees and highlighted the achievements of the department and importance of organizing such Memorial lectures in the department. Dr. Hema Gandotra, Assistant Professor, highlighted the contribution of Prof. Dube to the discipline of Sociology. Dr. Shakun Sharma, Lecturer, gave a brief introduction of the guest speaker, Prof. S.M. Patnaik.
Prof. Patnaik in his lecture highlighted the role of ethnography in the field of anthropology and its importance in bridging the gap between the self and the others. He discussed the limitations of ethnography in the field of public policy, how public policy making includes quantitative (statistical) data and helps in the formulation of different policies without having the inner understanding of the issues.
Arguing that public policy is a multidisciplinary field without any methodological weakness, he discussed the concept of "culture of apathy". He advocated for anthropology to be a universalistic science and ethnography needs to be used in policy making.
Prof. Keshav Sharma, Dean Academic Affairs, University of Jammu, in his presidential remarks shared his experiences with Prof. S.C Dube and his role in the field of Sociology.
He appreciated and congratulated the Department of Sociology for organizing this Memorial lecture on such a vibrant topic. Prof. Sharma highlighted the role of social sciences like Sociology in the making of policies and planning of the government.
Dr. Shaveta Sharma, Lecturer, presented formal vote of thanks. Prof. J.R Panda, Prof. Suman Jamwal and other faculty members of the university were among others who attended the lecture.
