Aditi Rao Hydari takes on trolls: Actors are not mere objects; unfair to judge us all the time

Actor Aditi Rao Hydari has somehow managed to keep her slate clean and not get embroiled in any controversies. But when it comes to trolls, the actor has had her share of experiences to share and hence, she has a lot to say about how it has become an unavoidable phenomenon in today’s time.
The actor, who recently starred in the film Bhoomi playing the role of Sanjay Dutt’s on-screen daughter, shares that during her initial years in the industry, she used to read these comments but eventually she learned the art of ignoring them. “I remember earlier, when I read some of them, I was left so shocked. So, I stopped looking at them and I was told don’t read negative comments. Even today, when someone shows me things written on social media for me, it makes me angry,” says Aditi.
The actor adds that opinionated comments are okay but it gets scary when people cross the line. “I have put up tweets where I have been trolled really badly and it often becomes sexual and very aggressive and dirty. Very often, it had to do with religion and politics too and that’s quite frightening. So, you have to learn to deal with it and not get scared like a coward either,” she says.
Agreeing that the world of entertainment is such a visual medium, Aditi feels it’s only natural for people to judge stars for their dressing and choices they make. However, she is quick to add that it’s mostly the female actors who face the brunt of it. “If you notice, there’s a kind of gender disparity even with social media trolls. People let the guys be, but they don’t let the girls be. I read some really nasty comments on actors’ social media posts and sometimes, I can’t just believe that someone can stoop so low. As for me, I honestly don’t look at it,” says Aditi, who can’t come to terms with people who take celebrities for granted.
“Somehow, these people forget that celebs are also human beings and not mere objects. Judging or abusing us all the time is not fair. We are not objects. Maybe we had a bad day or maybe it was raining, so we thought it’s better to wear bellies instead of high heels. People can’t be jumping down their throat. We don’t know where these people [trolls] are sitting, how they are dressed or what they are doing,” retorts Aditi.
