Governor inaugurates Boys Hostel at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University

KATRA, Oct 17: To meet the fast growing requirements of residential accommodation for the increasing number of students every year, Governor N. N. Vohra, Chancellor of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, inaugurated two new blocks of Basohli Boys Hostel.
These 5-storey Hostel Blocks, with a built up area of 1,44,000 sft, have been constructed by the University Engineering Wing at an estimated cost of Rs. 25.50 crore. The two Blocks have accommodation for 396 students and will augment the accommodation facilities in a big way for the increasing number of students in this University. It is pertinent to recall that the existing two Hostel Blocks have accommodation for 150 students. With the addition of two new blocks to the Basohli Boys Hostel, the total hostel accommodation in this fully residential University would now accommodate around 2000 students.
The Governor went around the Hostel Blocks and viewed the facilities provided in the dining hall, cafeteria, first-aid room, recreation hall and various rooms. He laid special emphasis on the steady growth of the University, while ensuring a high quality of teaching, training and research programmes. The Governor was informed that a 3-storey Girls Hostel building with a built up area of 1,20,000 sft is coming up in the campus which will be completed by January 2018 at an estimated cost of Rs. 36.25 crore having accommodation facilities for 418 students. With the completion of this hostel building, the total accommodation facilities will go up to provide for about 2400 students. The Governor also flagged off the 'Initiative Towards Green Campus' with 6 girl students taking off on a tour of the Campus on bicycles, to enlarge awareness among all the stakeholders to reduce vehicular movements to the bare minimum. The Governor interacted with the students associated with this initiative and lauded this effort. He also planted a sapling of Rudraksha in the Hostel premises on this occasion.
Prof. Sanjeev Jain, Vice Chancellor, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, presented to the Governor the details of the facilities made available for the hostel inmates. He also gave details of various ongoing infrastructure development works in the varsity.
Mr. H. L. Maini, Member Shrine Board; Mr. Jitendra Kumar Singh, Chief Executive Officer, SMVDSB; Mr. Prasanna Ramaswamy G, Deputy Commissioner, Reasi; Dr. M.K. Kumar and Mr. Anshul Garg, Additional CEOs of the Shrine Board; Mr. Tahir Bhat, SSP Reasi; senior civil, police and Shrine Board officers, faculty members, staff and the students of the University were present on the occasion.
