On Diwali, it’s all about my family, and reunion with friends: Ayushmann Khurrana

19/10/2017

To say that Ayushmann Khurrana loves celebrating Diwali, the festival of lights, is an understatement it’s his favourite festival! He tells us, “I’m always excited about Diwali. For me, the day has always been spent in Chandigarh (my hometown) with family.”
On why he loves Diwali so much, the actor says, “You love the day for the nostalgia, especially when you don’t stay in your hometown, and are away from parents. It becomes more special when you [live] in Mumbai, and then go home to all the [festive] hullabulloo. More than the firecrackers or sweets, I look forward to meeting my people.
This is the time I have reunions with my theatre group and college friends. I like the whole atmosphere, coupled with the slight nip in the air that’s there around this time of the year.”
Recalling his fondest Diwali memory from his teenage years, Ayushmann says, “Every Diwali has been special. But I remember, when I had just learnt driving, I would pack all the gifts, put them in the car boot and would take one of my friends along to deliver them to our family friends. It would be a two-day affair. We would listen to songs on the way. That’s my fondest memory just delivering gifts like any delivery boy!”
His face lights up when we talk about how this year’s Diwali is going to be one of his best, with both his films Bareilly Ki Barfi and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan performing well at the box office. Personally and professionally, Ayushmann is in a happy space. But since he’s a busy star now, how does he ensure that he gets to spend the day with his family?
He says that he usually does, though 2016 was an exception.
“Last year, I was shooting for Bareilly Ki Barfi in Lucknow. That was the only time I missed out on spending time with my family, because the connectivity to Chandigarh is really weird. You go by road, then five-six hours. You can’t make up for the shoot the next day,” says Ayushmann.
