Role of media crucial: VC JU

JAMMU, Oct 18: Acknowledging the crucial role of the media, fourth pillar of democracy, in bringing out facts, Vice Chancellor University of Jammu Prof R. D Sharma has hoped that media fraternity would adhere to journalistic ethics by verifying facts for the sake of objectivity.
“Ahead of filing any story or report, we hope media to verify the facts by taking all the versions into consideration before arriving at any conclusion", Prof Sharma said while interacting with media persons, adding that this will help in maintaining objectivity and feeding the people with accurate news. Reacting to recent allegations against the University by a section of media, Prof Sharma regretted that before doing the story, the views of the Jammu University were not sought.
The Vice Chancellor dwelt upon a volley of subjects and in reply to a question by the media persons, he said the Jammu University would never tolerate any type of sexual harassment. He said the norms and procedures laid down under the CASH and guidelines under Vishakha Judgement are strictly being adhered to and there is no question of making any compromise. He asserted that the University has zero tolerance to any kind of sexual harassment.
Prof Sharma lauded the media for its crucial role in bringing out facts before the people and hoped that while doing so it will always endeavor for reaching all the stake holders. "This is imperative because media has a wide outreach and being a most powerful medium, it controls the minds of the people", he said, adding that the constructive and positive role of the media is imperative for checking wrongs in the society. Prof. Sharma also extended Diwali greetings to the media fraternity.
On the sidelines of the said interaction, while replying to the other queries pertaining to a specific question about harassment of a retired Professor, the Vice Chancellor said that there are norms and procedures for re-employment as per the University Grants Comm ission model guidelines.
He elaborated by saying that no retired employee can be re-employed invariably without the recommendations of the concerned department. Such recommendations, he said are being forwarded to the Vice Chancellor through the concerned faculty for consideration.
Also, to justify the appointment, there should be adequate work-load for the reemployed teachers. Therefore, in absence of the departmental recommendations, the re-employment case of the concerned professor could not be considered, the Vice Chancellor added.
