SC puts off for eight weeks hearing on plea to treat Hindus as minorities in J&K

NEW DELHI, Dec 11: The Supreme Court on Monday adjourned the matter for eight weeks pertaining to a petition seeking a direction to give the benefits of minorities to Hindus in Jammu and Kashmir, as the Union of India could not file a detailed response.
One Ankur Sharma, had, in his plea, demanded that there should be identification of religious groups which were in minority in J&K and formation of a Minority Commission in the State.
The three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, also comprised Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud. In March, the apex court had asked the Centre to submit a report.
But the Centre has not been able to do so. The bench had observed that it was for the Government to act. It held, ”We cannot direct legislators to frame law in a particular manner.”
