The patient came to Alchemist with complain of abnormal eye size, pain and heaviness in the eye and vision changes. Giving information about surgery, Dr Prachi Jain said that after getting CT report we got to know that he was suffering from allergic fungal rhino sinusitis which is a nose disease and not an eye disease.
Dr Prachi further said that the fungus was growing in his nose and was spreading through nose to his brain and eye. After other investigation his surgery was planned and functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) was done. Allergic fungal sinusitis (AFS) is a common type of fungal infection in the sinuses.
The infecting fungi are found in the environment and cause an allergic reaction which results in thick fungal debris, sticky mucus and blockage of the infected sinus. Patients with AFS may have allergies, nasal polyps and may have asthma.
As a result of the condition, most patients develop chronic sinusitis which may affect their sense of smell, informed Dr Prachi. If left untreated, this condition may lead to displacement of the eyeball and vision loss said Dr. Prachi adding although AFS can occur at any age but it is more common in adolescents and young adults.
