JAMMU, Jan 18: The police has found the body of an eight-year-old girl, who was missing for the last one week, in Kathua district.
The girl's body was found near the jungles at Rasana village of Hira Nagar yesterday, the police said.
The parents of the girl had lodged a missing person's report in the Hiranagar police station when she did not return home, they said.
"We are investigating into the matter as to what actually happened at this stage. Investigation is on," a police official said.
He said that the girl had left her home but did not return. The police has lodged an FIR based on a complaint from her parents.
The official said that the police had searched for the girl but could not trace her.
The body was handed over to the family after conducting postmortem, they said, adding that the medical report of the girl will form the basis for the investigation.
The protests rocked the area with people demanding the culprits be brought to book, the police said.
The government has constituted a special investigation team (SIT) headed by sub-divisional police officer Chadawal to probe into this matter, the police said.
Expressing her anguish over the abduction and murder of a minor girl belonging to nomadic Bakerwal community in Kathua, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday said incidents like this will be investigated expeditiously and the guilty will be punished.
Taking to micro-blogging site twitter the Chief Minister said “Outraged by the heinous incident in which a young Bakerwal girl has lost her life. Incidents like this will be investigated expeditiously & the guilty will be punished”.
Earlier in the day in Legislative Assembly (LA), opposition parties staged a walkout to protest against the murder of the girl of Bakerwal community in Kathua. As soon as proceedings of the House began, main opposition National Conference (NC) and Congress legislators were on their feet demanding action against police officers of the area for failing to trace an eight-year-old girl, who went missing last week.
However, her body was found under mysterious circumstances at her native village in Hiranagar Tehsil of Kathua district on Wednesday, which triggered agitation by the family and relatives.
The opposition legislators alleged that police did not make any efforts to trace the girl after she was abducted.
They demanded suspension of the Deputy Superintendent of Police and Station House Officer of the respective jurisdictions. Shouting slogans, the members disrupted the House proceedings.
However, Minister In-charge Law and Parliamentary Affairs Abdul Rehman Veeri said that enquiry has been initiated and action will be taken against the guilty.
The opposition members however, not satisfied with the reply, walked out from the House in protest.
