I want to portray the positive side of youth in films: Madhur Bhandarkar
16/02/2018
Known for his versatility, director Madhur Bhandarkar makes film on various subjects ranging from page 3 to politics. The Padma Shri awardee was in the Capital to attend Udaan Utsav, a youth festival in the North campus of Delhi University. On being asked if he would like to choose campus politics as a subject for a film, he says, “No. I don’t have any such subject in mind right now. Delhi University (DU) aur Jawaharlal Nehru Universityl (JNU) mein jo hua aur jo kuch bhi beech-beech mein hota rehta hai, uska mujhe bada dukh hai. Ye sab nahi hona chaiye.”
The filmmaker says that if he ever makes a film on students, it will portray their positive side. “I strongly feel that the incidents that took place in JNU and DU should not have happened. Youth are a very strong and important part of the mainstream and I would like to showcase them in a positive light. I also feel that there should be right portrayal of their side of the situation,” says Bhandarkar.
Speaking about his visit, Bhandarkar said, “DU is one of the most prestigious Universities and this was my first visit. It was an amazing experience to see the young and talented students performing. I was the chief guest over there and attended the show for a very short duration. But, I am going to be a part of the festival next year too and have also planned to organise a master class for the students,” says Bhandarkar. The filmmaker has cast people from all walks of life in his movies and wouldn’t mind promoting youngsters from the University. “I feel no talent is wasted. I have worked with the best of theatre people and have cast people from bars, streets, ramp and page 3 parties. I don’t mind promoting young artists,” says Bhandarkar.
