PM to address 6th convocation of SKUAST-J on May 19

JAMMU, May 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the sixth convocation ceremony of the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology in Jammu this week, Vice Chancellor Pradeep Kumar Sharma said today.
Governor N N Vohra, chancellor of the university, and Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti will also attend the hour-long programme on Saturday, Sharma told reporters.
"We used to hold convocations at the auditorium of the University of Jammu. This is for the first time, the function is being held at the SKUAST-Jammu campus," he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Jammu and Kashmir for two days this week, during which he will also inaugurate a hydro-electricity project and participate in the 100th birth anniversary celebration of Ladakhi spiritual leader Kushak Bakula, state government officials have said.
Sharma said the prime minister "has accepted the request to be the chief guest" at the convocation.
He said the university was ranked 10th among all the state agricultural universities in the country during 2017-18.
Professor Sharma also briefed that Sh. N.N, Vohra, Governor, J&K and Chancellor of the University and Ms Mehbooba Mufti Sayeed, Chief Minister Of Jammu & Kashmir and Pro Chancellor of the university along with galaxy of dignitaries including policymakers, academicians, administrators, members of university council and board of management shall be gracing the convocation with their presence. He informed that SKUAST-Jammu has three faculties i.e. Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Basic Sciences at Chatha and Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry at R.S. Pura. The university imparts various degree programmes at graduation, post graduation and Doctorate level of all the three faculties comprising 16 disciplines in Agricultural Sciences, 16 disciplines of Veterinary Sciences, 04 disciplines of Basic Sciences in its Masters programme and 31 disciplines in doctoral Programme. In addition to this, the University is running short term/skill oriented certificate courses leading to self employment. During 2017-18 the university was ranked 10th among all State Agricultural Universities in the country. He stated that our university was second in getting maximum numbers of ICAR-JRF fellowships in veterinary sciences and KVK Jammu was awarded with Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Rashtriya Krishi Vigyan Puruskaar for Zone 1 for the year 2016-17. The total strength of students undergoing various degree and certificate programmes is 1291. (UG=800, PG=227, PhD=244 and Certificate Courses=20). The University provides scholarships to the meritorious Under Graduate (UG)/PG students. The university has also established a placement and counseling Cell for soft skill development in students and also to help them in seeking employment.
Dr Dileep Kachroo, Registrar SKUAST-J, briefed that SKUAST-Jammu in its 6th Convocation shall award 444 degrees to 215 graduates (84 Agricultural, 91 Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, and 40 Biotechnology), 174 postgraduate (67 Agriculture, 9 Biotechnology, 12 Basic Sciences, 09 MBA in Agri-Business Management and 77 Veterinary Sciences) and 55 Doctoral programmes (25 Agricultural Sciences, 03 Basic Sciences, 09 Biotechnology and 37 Veterinary Sciences). Besides this 06 Gold Medals (Undergraduate programmes) shall be awarded to meritorious students, 100 merit certificates (Post Graduates and Doctoral programmes) will also be awarded to the meritorious students from this university. The convocation will start at 3.15 pm on Saturday (19-05-2018) in Baba Jitto auditorium of the SKUAST-Jammu at Chatha. The press conference was also attended by Dr. Amrish Vaid, Dr. Vikas Tandon, Dr. P.K. Rai, Dr. Rakesh, Dr. Punit, Mr. Zameer -ul-Haq, Dr. B. Ajrawat, Dr. Vishal and Dr. Veena, Vikas Gandotra..
