Two cops martyred in gunfight with militants



SRINAGAR, Jun 12: Two policemen guarding the court complex in Pulwama district were killed today in a militant attack.
The militants opened fire at the police picket guarding the district court complex in Pulwama town in the early hours, a police spokesman said.
He said the cops retaliated the firing. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, two cops were killed.
Following the incident, the area has been cordoned off and further details are awaited.
However, A major tragedy was averted today as security forces detected and destroyed an IED in the Awantipora area of Pulwama district in Jammu and Kashmir, police said.
A foot patrol of security forces detected an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by militants at Kanjinag this morning, a police official said.
A bomb disposal squad was summoned to the spot and the IED destroyed, he added.
Official sources stated that a group of militants opened fire upon the police post resulting in on spot death of two security guards and injury to another at Takiya Wagam opposite to Government Degree College Pulwama near Barpora Kareemabad.
The injured cop Manzoor Ahmad has been shifted to SMHS hospital for treatment, they said.
The deceased cops have been identified as Selection Grade Constables Ghulam Rasool and Ghulam Hassan.
Thousands people attended the last rites of slain policeman of Wohlutra Panzala Rafiabad in north Kashmir's Baramulla district.
An eye witness said that thousands of mourners across Rafiabad, including men, women and elderly, assembled in Wohlutra Rafiabad, native village of one of a policeman Ghulam Hassan Wagay who was killed in a militant attack in south Kashmir's Pulwama district during last Monday night.
The security forces have been following the Ramzan ceasefire promised by the Home Ministry. The Militants however, have launched continuous attacks on the security establishment.
In first 20 days of the Ramzan ceasefire, Militants have carried out 44 attacks in different parts of Kashmir valley. Of the 44 attacks by Militants, 20 were grenade attacks and the rest random firing in which four security personnel have been killed and 33 others were injured so far.
Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti has strongly condemned the killing of two Policemen in a pre-dawn attack at Pulwama today.
In a statement, the Chief Minister described the act as highly reprehensible which was committed in a night during which the entire Muslim Ummah was seeking forgiveness from Allah (SWT).
Mehbooba Mufti cautioned people against such incidents which have the potential of depriving them from the gains of the peace moves like suspension of security operations and dialogue offer undertaken by the State and Central Governments recently. She asked people to stand guard of the positivity generated by these peace moves on the ground which has given them ample relief and ease.
The Chief Minister has conveyed her sympathies to the bereaved families of the slain cops while praying for peace to the departed souls.
