The Phenomenon of love at first sight had never before been depicted on a theatrical stage with such romanticism, emotion and passion until the work of William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. This creative masterpiece has been etched into history and our memories as the greatest romantic tale, fortified by themes of public/social institutional injustice, violence and death. Aarushi Thakur Rana's rendition of this cult classic presents Romeo and Juliet in a new avatar, underpinned by Indian nuances whilst maintaining the elementary themes synonymous and applauded by the audience.
Romeo and Juliet was first penned in the late 15th century, and sets the scene by introducing the Montagues and the Capulets, two elitist families bound only by their detestation for each other. The plot deepens when the young and beautiful Juliet belonging to the Capulets and the handsome and impulsive Romeo descending from the Montagues, in a fortuitous twist of fate meet at an event hosted by Juliet's father and are love struck at first sight.
Young, fearless and in love, Romeo and Juliet decide to bid farewell to their town and elope. However all is not as well as it seems, Romeo has a fierce and aggressive encounter with Tybalt, Juliet's brother. Tybalt challenges Romeo to a duel. Romeo for the sake of the love of his life is unwilling to engage in violence, however his dearest friend Mercutio who bears a huge amount of resent for the Capulets is not as passive. The two exchange blows and in an attempt to break the fight, Mercutio is stabbed to death. Romeo is enraged by the death of his friend and avenges his death and makes haste to flee.
Upon learning of her brother's death at the hands of Romeo, Juliet furiously asks Romeo to leave Verona and never to show his face again. In the meantime the Capulets are in search of a suitable suitor for Juliet and present Paris, an honourable nobleman. The plot twists and turns as Romeo is on the run and Juliet has the realisation that she cannot live without her husband, whom she married in secret.
