Workshop on Breast Cancer “Early Detection & Referring to Right Centre” organized by NHM

JAMMU, Jun 23: One day Workshop on Breast Cancer "Early Detection & Referring to Right Centre" was organized by National Health Mission, J&K in collaboration with Biocon Ltd, Bangalore and AHA Regional Chapter Jammu, at Hotel Lords INN, Jammu on 23rd June 2018.
Dr Yashpal Sharma, Mission Director, NHM, J&K while inaugurating the workshop, welcomed the participants and highlighted the objectives of the workshop. He said that Breast Cancer is the second most common cancer in the world and most frequent cancer in women with an estimate of 25% of new cases diagnosed of all cancers every year with an increase in incidence in younger age group also. There is need of early detection of cancer for which he emphasized screening at the primary level and referral of suspected cases to secondary and tertiary care for diagnosis and treatment. Primary Health Care is limited to Reproductive Child Health & Communicable diseases which address only 20% of the health care need. Keeping in view prevalence of NCDs and low utilization of Public Health Facilities, Government of India initiated a National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancers, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS) which focuses on promotion of healthy life styles, early diagnosis and management of diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases & common cancers e.g. cervix cancer, breast cancer & oral cancer.
Ministry of Health & Family welfare, GoI has envisioned Health and Wellness Centres for providing comprehensive health care, including non-communicable diseases and maternal and child health services.
Dr. Pawan Malhotra, Director ASCOMS while addressed the participants, appreciated the efforts of National Health Mission in providing health care facilities to common people from primary to tertiary level. Hefocused on the risk factors for all Non-communicable diseases, which include Tobacco & alcohol use, high salt intake, obesity and high blood pressure. He said that the workshop shall raise the concepts of the service providers at all levels of health care facilities, and sought suggestions from the participants for improving the early detection and referral mechanism of the suspected cases of cancer.
Dr. Mohd. Shafi Koka, State Nodal Officer, NHM, J&K while addressing the participants in the valedictory session thanked Mr. Sandeep Mohan, Associate Director, Biocon Ltd, Bangalore along with his team and Academy of Hospital Administration, Regional Chapter, Jammu, for their support in organizing the workshop in the State. He requested the Officers of Health Department to follow the processes in letter.
and spirit for raising the awareness among the common masses and improving the healthcare at primary level.
