SPCB conducts surprise checks at various Shopping Malls

JAMMU, Jul 11: In continuation to the drive against use of banned polythene packaging materials and allied products having thickness less than 50 microns as per SRO-45 of 2017 dated 3.2.2017, J&K SPCB special Task Force headed by Regional Director SPCB Jammu, Er. J. N. Sharma and team comprising Dr. Yash Pal Scientist 'B', Divisional Officers viz PCB Samba South Er. A.B. Jandial, PCB Jammu North Er. T.S. Chib, PCB Jammu South Er. Badder Hussain and PCB Samba North Er. Deepak Abrol, Dr. Mohan Lal Snehi, PCB Rajouri and Er. Arshad Malik, Er. Surinder Tripathi, Er. Anupam Kaul, Er. Chander Kotwal, Er. Kuldeep Bhan and Field Inspectors Naveed Chowdhary and Dimple Sharma. As per directions of Chairman, J&K SPCB B. Siddhartha Kumar, IFS and guidance of B.M. Sharma, IFS Member Secretary, J&K SPCB and as per the SRO issued by the government under the J&K State Non-Biodegradable Material (Management, Handling and Disposal) Act, 2007, the PCB team raided various establishment s in Jammu and fined as per the provisions of the Act to the defaulters and also seized the banned polythene material.
The Regional Director Jammu appealed to the Traders, Manufacturers, Stockists and persons using such banned material to cooperate with the authorities in eradication of such material as has been banned by the government vide SRO-45 issued by the J&K Government so that eco-fragile environment of state can be protected. In the raid today, the main establishment raided was Vishal Mega Mart, Railhead Complex Jammu and directions have been issued to refrain from using such material in future. Scientific investigation carried out on the banned packaging material found in the premises with the thickness of packaging material ranging between 20-35 microns. The compound penalty for using the banned packaging material was imposed on the spot against the offenders.
Besides this, Regional Director J&K SPCB Er. J.N. Sharma has also appealed to the citizens of Jammu to avoid buying the banned material having thickness less than 50 microns as they are equal defaulters than the person who is selling it. Regional Director gave the message that PCB shall carry out this movement in future and even the Local Bodies, Gram Panchayat, Municip alities, Municipal Corpor ation, Tourism department and Police department shall also carry out similar drive to sensitise the common man against the use of banned polythene in the state as they are also authorized under the Act to seize the banned material and handover the same to he Pollution Control Board.
