Minor killed, four injured in blast in Shopian

#Restrictions in parts of Srinagar

SRINAGAR, Jul 11: A minor boy was killed and four children were injured in a blast inside a residential compound in Shopian district today, the police said. The explosion took place in the residential compound of Khursheed Ahmad Sheikh at Meemandar in Shopian district this afternoon, resulting in injuries to five children, all aged between six and eight years, a police officer said.
The children were rushed to a hospital, where one of them, SalikIqbal Sheikh, was declared brought dead, he added. The remaining four include three boys and a girl.
They are undergoing treatment and condition of three is stated to be critical, the police officer said. Initial investigations suggest that the children were fiddling with the explosive when it exploded, he said.
An investigation is underway to ascertain the nature of the explosive and how it reached the residential compound.
Authorities today imposed restrictions in parts of Srinagar city to thwart any protests by separatists, who had called for a shutdown against killing of a civilian allegedly in security forces firing on protestors in Shopian district.
Restrictions under section 144 of CrPC were imposed in five police station areas Khanyar, Maharajgunj, Nowhatta, Safakadal and Rainawari as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order, a police official said.
Meanwhile, normal life was affected across the Valley due to the strike.
Schools and other educational institutions remained closed while attendance in government offices was thin due to lack of public transport, the official said.
Two Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militants, including a Pakistani national, were killed in an encounter while the civilian died and 20 others sustained injuries during clashes with security forces near the scene of gunbattle in Shopian yesterday.
