Veniya defeats Gopi in Dhangal finals

VIJAYPUR, Oct 16: Wrestler Veniya defeated Gopi of Ludhiana in the Annual Peer Bbaba Peer Shatala Wrestling Comp-etition played at Bari Brahmana in Vijaypur Assembly Constituency on Tuesday evening.
Giving away the winners and runners up trophies to the wrestlers, National Conference State Secretary and former minister Mr Surjeet Singh Slathia said at the concluding function that holding such competitions will go a long way in motivating youth to take up traditional sport and make a mark at various levels.
Mr Slathia said that sports have immense potential as a career and therefore talented ones should concentrate on their chosen games with avowed objective of achieving excellence. He acknowledged the popularity of Dhangal in an era of cricket, soccer and hockey and said that wrestling has made a mega comeback at the national and international levels. He referred to the Commonwealth Games and said wrestling has been acknowledged as a premier sport and due impetus is given to its promotion. He urged the youth to come forward and show their talent on a bigger canvass.
The former minister exuded confidence that various tourneys, especially in the segment of wrestling, will provide an opportunity to the budding wrestlers to benefit from veterans and emulate various techniques, which will sharpen their talent.
Mr Slathia complimented the participants and congratulated the participants for excellent performance and hoped they will leave indelible mark at the national level as well. The competition was watched by a large number of people, which included prominent citizens including National Conference Block Presi-dent Mr Bhagwan Singh, Ex Chairman Municipal Corporation Bari Brah-mana Mr Raman Gupta Vice President NC Mr Vijay Singh Ex Sarpa-nches Mr Ghulam Nabi, Mr Sadiq Hussain and President NC Labour Union Mr Naar Singh.
