National Training programme on quality seed production of cereal crops starts at SKUAST-J

JAMMU, OCT 22: Five day National Training Programme on "Quality Seed Production Techn ology of Cereal crops" was inaugurated by Prof. P.K. Sharma, Vice Chancellor, SKUAST Jammu. The training programme is jointly organized by National Seed Research & Testing Centre (NSR&TC), Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare, GOI, Varanasi (UP) and ICAR-Mega Seed Project, SKUAST-Jammu w.e.f. Oct. 22-26, 2018 at University Campus, Chatha. Prof. Pradeep K. Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, SKUAST-J in his key note address highlighted the important role of soil, water and quality seed for sustainable development. He said good quality seed is perquisite for farmer's welfare. Prof. Sharma deliberated in his key note address that maintaining the genetical purity & vigour of the seed is a big challenge. Prof. Sharma said, climate change is also affecting the seed vigour & quality & it's the duty of plant breeder to develop new varieties which can sustain under the changing climatic conditions. He elaborated that developing of good quality seed can be achieved at farmer's field & for that university is already giving trainings to the farmers. He informed the house that there is an ample scope for the production of organic seeds as state of J&K is having diverse agroclimatic conditions which suits the production of organic seeds.Director NRSTC, Dr. Arvind N. Singh was the guest of honour, he explained about the role of NSRTC in monitoring the seed quality of different seed certifying agencies and resolving the disputes if any regarding the seed quality. He also informed about the HRD activities taken by NSRTC and appreciated the expertise available at SKUAST-Jammu to conduct such training for the participants at national level. Dr. J. P. Sharma, Director Research, SKUAST-Jammu informed that the training was conceived to cater to the needs of the concerned resource persons and stake holders in Seed Production. In The first lecture of the training programme Dr. J. P. Sharma delivered a lecture on "Varietal Deterioration in the Cereal Crops". The inaugural function was attended by Dr. Deepak Kher , Director (P&M), Dr. T.S. A. Ganaie Director Education, Dr. S.E.H. Rizvi, Dean Basic Science, Prof. R K. Gupta HOD Vegetables, Prof. B.C. Sharma, HOD Agronomy, Prof. Jyoti Kachroo HOD ABM, Prof. Hafiz Ahmed HOD Entomology, Prof. Sanjay Guleria HOD Plant Biochemistry, HOD's, Senior Professor's & Faculty members. The Course-Co-coordinators Dr. Magdeshwar Sharma, Dr. Vishal Raina and Dr. Anjani Kumar Singh will be conducting the training programme along with the Corse co-ordinator. Dr. Pardeep Wali Course Co-ordinator gave the vote of thanks. The proceedings of the programme was conducted by Dr. Vivak M. Arya.
