The rumours of superstar Mahesh Babu actively supporting the Telugu Desam Party started swirling after he was seen in the company of the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu on more than one occasion.
However, Mahesh Babu’s wife Namrata Shirodkar is quick to clarify, “My husband respects what Naidu has done for the state, but the progress of both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana is a matter of great pride for him. Just because he is seen with Naidu, it doesn’t make him a political figure.”
Meanwhile, rumours that Mahesh Babu would be campaigning for the TDP and that he may even contest for the elections have been gathering momentum in Andhra Pradesh. “Not at all. Mahesh is not campaigning for any political party.
Nor does he intend to contest any elections or pursue any kind of political ambitions,” states Namrata categorically, adding, “He barely says a few words to me, where will he make big speeches on public platforms? Mahesh has no time to do anything apart from shooting for his films. And any free time he has is family time. He doesn’t even step out to meet friends.”
Namrata’s clarification comes at a time when there appear to be retaliatory moves from the government against the superstar, including the freezing of his bank accounts allegedly for the non-payment of GST. There are even hushed rumours in Andhra Pradesh of Mahesh Babu being further targeted.
But Namrata says she and her husband aren’t worried. “When you know the truth is on your side, when you have dutifully paid all your taxes but you are still targeted for non-payment of dues, then what do you do? You grin and bear the harassment because you have nothing to hide,” she says. On a parting note, she adds, “Mahesh has the highest respect for the party and politicians who run the country and the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. But he has no inclination or interest in politics or in actively campaigning for any political party.
He is happy to be loved as an actor and the closest he will come to politics is playing a politician on screen. Beyond that, he has no political ambitions or affiliations at all. He is the most apolitical person I know.”
