JAMMU, OCT 18: BharatiyaJanata Party (BJP) State Executive Member Raman Suri today said, decisions taken by State Road Safety Council were appreciable, but more focus is needed to be paid on construction and remodeling of safe roads besides removing all grey areas that cause repeated accidents on killer roads of Jammu and Kashmir. He said that for the purpose, Public Works Department (PWD) has to play a major role and credible engineers with special knowledge about highway and road constructions should be engaged to give J&K, safe and secure roads. Raman Suri said that despite all efforts, there's no end to increasing road accidents on highways, state roads and even on city roads wherein precious human lives are being lost. Still worst is that even city roads, rotaries and crossings beside blind curves are continuing to pose serious threats to lives of commuters and other road users.
Raman Suri added that by merely enhancing Road Accident Victim Fund, the purpose of providing safe roads won't be served. However, the decision of government to give incentive of Rs 5 lakh per vehicle to replace 500 old buses of 15 years-of-age and above with new buses is a welcome step. He urged government to introduce more electric buses on other routes which are proving to be quite effective public transport in both Jammu as well as Srinagar cities.
He urged government to also construct new parking places do decongest cities and added that there are several sites that can be used for the purpose. If need arise a special committee of government representatives and citizens should be constituted to identify idle lying areas that can be developed as parking lots.Meantime, JMC should also be encouraged to do away with dump yards from city areas that don't go along with smart city projects, Raman Suri said.
