DB directives in PIL seeking modern slaughter houses in J&K

Jammu, Dec 2: In the much publicized Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by an NGO ‘SAVE’ (Save Animal Value Environment) through its Chairperson Devinder Kaur Madaan alias Rumpy Madaan seeking closure of un-regulated and un-registered/ un-licensed slaughter houses/ meat shops in the State of Jammu and Kashmir including Jammu/ Srinagar Cities, a Division Bench of the High Court comprising Chief Justice Gita Mittal and First Pusine Judge Justice Rajesh Bindal directed respondents to place on record the statistics regarding the daily Veterinary Doctor wise pre-mortem and post-mortem examination of the animals intended to be slaughtered before the next date of hearing. 8. It appears that there is a need for adequate number of Veterinary Doctors to conduct pre-mortem and ante-mortem examination of the animals intended for slaughtering.
DB further directed that an evaluation thereof, be conducted by the Secretary, Animal Husbandry Department and report with regard to the existing number of Veterinary Doctors for this purpose as well as projection of number of such Veterinary Doctors, who are required to be placed so as to avoid illegal and improper slaughtering of the animals. 10.
The importance of this issue can be sufficiently emphasized as it is an extremely important public health matter as slaughtered animals are used for human consumption. JNF
