Weak bone fractures can be treated with minimally invasive procedure

SRINAGAR, JAN 21: Minimally invasive spinal procedure, proving to be a boon for patients with weak bones undergoing sudden fractures or deformities. Balloon kyphoplasty is a recent advancement, providing a big sigh of relief for patients with conditions including acute and chronic spinal deformities. Poor Bone Mineral Density (BMD) is one of the leading causes of structural deterioration of the bone tissues leading to its fragility, due to a condition called osteoporosis. This condition increases the susceptibility of fractures in the spine, hips and wrists. According to a recent study, it is estimated that over 200 million Indians have abnormally low bone mass placing them at a risk of developing osteoporosis. And approximately one in every four patients dies within a year following an osteoporotic hip fracture. "Balloon Kyphoplasty is performed with the proper care and helps in providing relief from unbearable pain and enhances physical movements of a patient. Around 90 percent of patients reported a total pain relief within 24 hours of the procedure. During this procedure, a small balloon is guided through the instrument into the vertebra. The incision size is approximately 1 cm in length. The balloon is carefully inflated in an attempt to raise the collapsed vertebra and return it to its normal position inflation of balloon creates a void (cavity) in the vertebral body. Once the vertebra is in the correct position the balloon is deflated and removed. The cavity is filled with bone cement forming an internal cast to support the surrounding bone and prevent further collapse." Said Dr Bipin Walia, Senior Director & Head, Nuerosurgery Head Unit 1 Head- Neuro Spine Program Max Super Specialty Hospital, Saket Studies also reported patients who have undergone this procedure has a significant improvement in quality of life, improvement in mobility including the ability to perform daily activities such as walking, hobbies and work. It is a minimally invasive treatment that stabilizes the fracture, thereby reducing pain and providing with correction of the deformity.
"Balloon Khphoplasty can be done using either local or general anesthesia the surgeon will determine the most appropriate method based on the patient's overall condition.
The procedure generally takes about one hour per fracture and may require overnight stay if it is to be performed on multiple fractures. It is also a proven fact that complication rate with balloon kyphoplasty is low in comparison with the most of surgical procedures. Added Dr Bipin
