Balwant Thakur addresses on World Theatre Day

Johannesburg, MAR 26: Balwant Thakur- the Cultural Diplomat of India to South Africa addressed the world online on the eve of World Theatre Day. World Theatre Day was initiated in the year 1961 by the International Theatre Institute, Paris and is celebrated every year on 27th March across the world by theatre practitioners, organizations, institutions and lovers of theatre. In Jammu Natrang pioneered to start this tradition in 1985 and continued this tradition till date by holding seminars, presentations, festivals and events to mark this International day. In wake of COVID-19 outbreak the entire theatre community including International Theatre Institute has decided to celebrate this day on-line.
In his address Balwant Thakur said that World Theatre Day is a celebration for those who can see the value and importance of this great art from "Theatre" and act as a wakeup call for governments, politicians, and institutions which have not yet recognized its value to the people and to the individual and have yet not realized it's potential for overall socioeconomic cultural development.
Referring to Jammu in particular Balwant Thakur said that people out here need to take pride in the fact that it is theatre which gave this region a new cultural, linguistic and intellectual identity. Dogras for that matter should not forget the contribution of theatre which took Dogri to Russia, UK, Germany, South Africa, UAE, Hungary, Poland and represented in world occasions like Frankfurt Frankfurt International Theatre Festival, World Experimental Theatre Festival and Theatre Olympics.
On this auspicious day he complemented to all those who worked selflessly and tirelessly to keep this amazing art alive.
Adding further Balwant Thakur who is currently the Director of Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center Johannesburg, South Africa said that International days are marked to educate public on issues of concern, to address global problems and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity. Each International day provides the community an opportunity to organize activities related to the theme and create public awareness on the same.
In the hours of crises which the world is facing today in wake of COVID-19 out break, it becomes the larger responsibility of the creative community to sensitize public about the possible threat through their creative mediums.
