Natrang observes ‘World Theatre Day’ through Video Conferencing

JAMMU, Mar 27: Keeping the prevailing situation in mind where social distancing is the only way to avoid the spread of Corona virus and respecting the present Lockdown orders, Natrang Jammu observed 'World Theatre Day' in a unique manner by organising a 'Video-Conference' with the title 'Theatre From Distance'of its senior functionaries which was initiated by Director Natrang, Mr. Balwant Thakur (Cultural Diplomat of India at South Africa). This is pertinent to mention here that like many other prominent feats, Natrang pioneered celebration of 'World Theatre Day' in J&K since 1985 and continued this tradition till date by holding seminars, presentations, festivals & events to mark this International day. Mr. Thakur stated that in wake of COVID-19 outbreak, this year we are deliberately omitting the word 'Celebration' and as a mark of solidarity, we are observing it by keeping Social Distancing intact.
World Theatre Day was initiated in the year 1961 by the International Theatre Institute, Paris and is celebrated every year on 27th March across the world by theater practitioners, organizations, institutions and lovers of theatre.
Balwant Thakur who is currently the Director of Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center Johannes-burg, South Africa said that International days are marked to educate public on issues of concern, to address global problems and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity. Each International day provides the community an opportunity to organize activities related to the theme and create public awareness on the same. In the hours of crises which the world is facing today in wake of COVID-19 out break, it becomes the larger responsibility of the creative community to sensitize public about the possible threat through their creative mediums.
Natrang Artists who participated in the conference included Suresh Kumar, Mipham Otsal, Neeraj Kant, Anil Tickoo, Sanjeev Gupta, Vikrant Sharma, Sumeet Sharma, Aarushi Thakur, Mohd. Yaseen and Gauri Thakur.
