Balwant condoles death of theatre doyen Ebrahim Alkaazi

Johannesburg, AUG 4: Balwant Thakur the director of Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, Consulate General of India Johannesburg condoled the death of the theater doyen Ebrahim Alkazi who died at New Delhi at the age of 94. Celebrated as a theatre legend, Ebrahim Alkazi was the longest serving director of National School of Drama. As director NSD he shaped the course of modern Indian theatre, establishing links between traditional vocabulary and modern idiom. In Mumbai, Alkazi did powerful retentions of Greek tragedies, Shakespeare, Henrik Ibsen, Chekov and August Strindberg.
At 50, Alkazi quit NSD and theatre and set up the Art Heritage gallery in New Delhi with his wife and built up his collection of art, photographs and books.
Born to a wealthy Saudi Arabian father and Kuwaiti mother, Alkazi was one of nine siblings who had a comfortable childhood in Pune. After the partition the rest of his family moved to Pakistan but Alkazi decided to stay in India. Interested both in fine art and theatre, as a student at St Xavier's College in Mumbai he joined Sultan Bobby Padamsee's Theatre group company. Though he headed to London in late 1940s to pursue art, he eventually joined Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts UK.
In paying tributes to the departed soul Balwant Thakur was joined online by his colleagues of Natrang Jammu which included Suresh Kumar, Neeraj Kant, Anil Tickoo, Sumeet Sharma, Vikrant Sharma, Aarushi Thakur, Mohd. Yaseen, Mahikshit Singh, Brijesh Sharma, Gopi Sharma, Vrinda Sharma, Vanshika Gupta and Meenakshi Bhagat.
