GMC Jammu organises awareness event on “Importance of Gender Equality”

JAMMU, May 15: To create awareness about gender equality in the Society, an awareness event was was organised in GMC, Jammu on "Importance of Gender Equality: Challenges and Solutions". The event was convened under the aegis of 'Gender equality and Gender harmony committee' headed by Dr Rakesh Bahl, Professor, Department of Community Medicine who introduced the theme of the event to the audience comprising of Senior Faculty and MBBS students.
The session began with an impassioned speech by Pragati Sharma who highlighted the unquestionable need for gender equality to be established and maintained in the society both at home & workplace.
The main item of the event was a satirical streetplay by students of First and Final Profs that highlighted several sensitive issues regarding gender inequality prevalent in the society like objectification, victim blaming, cyber safety and male harassment etc. This was followed by an insightful discussion by Rupambir Singh and Lavanya on imperative roles of professional educational institutions in actively promoting gender equality as a part of solution & personlity development.
Dr Shashi Sudan Sharma, Principal & Dean who was the chief guest on the occassion said that there is no room for any kind of gender inequality in the modern civilised Society & it is the responsibility of everyone to practice and ensure gender equality in all spheres of life.She further said that such events should be held regularly to not only to create awareness about importance of gender equality but also to spread awareness about the mechanisms avaiable to address any issue related to gender inequality.
She exhorted the Students to take an oath to practice & preach gender equality in their whole lives.
HoDs & administrative Staff also attended the event.
