MeT predicts heavy snow on the last day of Chillai kalan

SRINAGAR, Jan 28: As Chillai kalan', the 40-day period of harsh winter, nears end the weather department has predicted heavy snow on Monday and also issued "yellow alert warning" for Jammu and Kashmir.
The Chillai kalan comes to an end on January 30.
The meteorological department has forecast widespread, moderate snow and rain in Jammu with heavy snowfall in Pir Panchal, south Kashmir and Doda Kishtwar belts on January 30.
The IMD has issued a "yellow colour weather warning"- indicating severely bad weather on January 30.
"Peak of Chilai Kalan to bid good bye J&K n Ladakh with good Snowfall. Expect widespread moderate to heavy snowfall in J&K and Ladakh on 30th Jan," MeT Director Sonum Lotus tweeted.
Today and tomorrow , the weather is likely to remain generally cloudy with light snow and rain at scattered places of Jammu and Kashmir. On January 31, light to moderate snow, rain is expected at scattered places, MeT said.
The fresh weather prediction can cause snow avalanches in avalanche prone areas and also may affect surface and air transportation on January 30.
The MeT has advised people not to venture out in avalanche prone areas, unless in an emergency.
Meanwhile, the tourist resorts of Gulmarg and Pahalgam continue to freeze.
Pahalgam in south Kashmir's Anantnag district, recorded a low of minus 6.9 degrees Celsius The minimum in Gulmarg, the famous ski resort in north Kashmir's Baramulla district, was minus 7.2 degrees Celsius, officials said. Gulmarg was also the coldest recorded place in Jammu and Kashmir.
The mercury in Srinagar settled above the freezing point. Srinagar registered a low of 1.7 degree Celsius.
