GDC Vijaypur celebrates World Wetlands Day

JAMMU, Feb 2: World Wetlands Day is the ideal time to increase people's understanding of these critically important ecosystems. In this regard, Ecoclub (Green Warriors) and Department of Envi-ronmental Sciences of GDC Vijay-pur celebrates World Wetlands Day by organising different activities in the college campus.
The programme was initiated with the welcome address by Prof. Poonam Kundan (Convener, Ecoclub and Head, Department of Environmental Sciences) where she briefed students about the importance of wetlands and she further said that the World wetlands day is observed on February 2 every year with an aim to raise global awareness about the crucial role of wetlands for people and the planet. She also stressed on this years'theme that is "It's Time for Wetlands Restoration". Students of the college actively participated in the wall paintings in the college campus depicting importance of wetlands. Nearly 15 students of semester I and Semester III actively participated in the wall paintings in five different groups. Principal of the college, Dr. Vandana Gupta appreciated the efforts of the students for their active participation in thecollege activities. She said that the day highlights the urgent need to prioritize wetland restoration and to raise awareness about wetlands to reverse their rapid loss and encourage actions to conserve and restore them.
The whole event was coordinated by Prof. Poonam Kundan and co-coordinated by Dr. Shittal Sharma, Prof. Anil Bhagat, Prof. Renuka Kundal, Dr. Priyanka Ganjoo and Ms. Disha Arti. Refreshment was distributed among all the participants and certificates were also awarded to active participants.
