SHO Gandhi Nagar beats up lawyer, Bar demands suspension of erring SHO, PSO

Massive protest held by Bar Association, road blocked for three hours

JAMMU: The Lawyers of Jammu went on lightening strike as protest today when the news of beating up of an Advocate Harshwardan Gupta spread.
It may be mentioned that allegedly Mr Harshwardhan Gupta Advocate who was also Central Govt Standing Counsel was manhandled, beat and unlawfully detained by the SHO Police Station Gandhi Nagar Mr Arun Jamwal. So much so that the PSO of the SHO also beat up the Advocate in the gypsy and the Police Station.
The Police has behaved in the most barbaric and uncivilized manner and we are not going to tolerate this, said an Advocate while talking to JOURNEY LINE.
A press note of the J&K HC Bar Asso said that in protest of the illegal detention, beating, manhandling and harassment of Harshvardhan Gupta at the hands of Police
personnel of Police Station, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, J&K High Court Bar Association, Jammu abstained from work in the courts, as a consequence whereof, the work remained paralysed in all the courts.
While shouting slogans against the erring police personnel, the members of the Association held a strong protest demonstration at main road, Janipur for almost three hours and condemned the brutal acts of the police.
The Association sought the intervention of the senior police officials at the earliest in the matter and demand stern action against its employees who are the culprits and is of the opinion that no such repeated incidents would be tolerated, in which its members are selectively targeted and harassed by the police without any fault. The Association decided to hold its General House meeting on 19-04-14 to chalk out further course of action in the matter.
Former Bar Presidents namely Mr A K Sawhney, Sunil Sethi Advocates also joined the protesters and sat on dharna on the main road as a mark of protest on the assault on lawyers.
Addressing the Advocates, Mr A K Sawhney said that this was not an assault on one lawyer but the entire judicial fraternity and needs to be viewed very seriously. On one side these Police officers are expected to behave in a civilized manner and are sent to the Police Academy for such courses , on the otherside while on duty they behave with intellectual citizens in such a way, which is totally against the law and cannot be tolerated by any civilized society.
Mr Ranjit Singh General Secretary of the Bar Association, Mr Rajesh Thappa, Mr Naresh Salgotra, Mr Aleem Sheikh, Mr Hunar Gupta, Mr Aseem Sawhney, Mr Daljit Manhas, Mr Vishal Sharma, Mr Parimoksh Seth, Mr Naresh Raina , Mr Shristhi Menghi, Mr Shakir Hussain, Mr Sandeep Sharma, Mr Vikram Rathore, Mr Varrut Gupta besides several others participated in the protests.
Later the SP City and other senior officers reach the spot and pacified the Advocates. It was learnt that the SSP Jammu Mr Atul Goel and other Police officers reached the Court premises later in the evening to assess the situation and interact with the members of the judicial fraternity.
