Sham directs CCDU functionaries to create greater awareness about water sanitation

SRINAGAR, JULY 23: Minister for PHE, Irrigation & Flood Control, Sham Lal Sharma has called upon the functionaries of Communication & Capacity Development Unit (CCDU) and Water & Sanitation Support Organization (WSSO) to adopt pro-active approach in generating greater awareness & knowledge about safe drinking water and water hygiene behaviours among the masses, so that water borne diseases are prevented.
Chairing a meeting of officers which was convened here to review the functioning of CCDU, the Minister said that Central Government has launched a nationwide campaign to educate the masses about the water sanitation and judicious use of water, for this purpose a separate wing namely CCDU has been created for each State. This component of National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP) has been mandated to educate the masses about the water usages and water sanitation through various means. He emphasized the need for expeditious implementation of this programme in every nook and corner of the State to achieve its real objective.
Stressing the need for stepping up campaign through news papers, Electronic media and seminars and similar other means, the Minister directed for active involvement of credible NGOs, social organizations, educational institutions and above all Panchayati Raj Institutions in this noble cause. He said all water borne diseases can be prevented by consumption of safe drinking water, provided the public is educated properly for water sanitation and hygienic behaviours. He said Government of India allocates sizeable funds every year for the purpose and all those associated with this programme must make their best efforts to achieve the desired goals, said the Minister. While briefing the Minister about the initiatives taken by the organization, the Commissioner/Secretary PHE, Dr. Pawan Kotwal, who is also Chairman of the CCDU and WSSO, said that various mediums for spreading the messages about the water sanitation and water usages have been adopted. These include Radio, Television, newspapers, hoardings at public places and involvement of various organizations/institutions as per the guidelines of the programme. The Organization has also launched training programmes for various stakeholders through consultants/experts, so that the quality of water can be tested at different sources. The masses are being educated/trained to use different techniques to ensure sanitation of water, besides PRIs are provided kits for undertaking water quality tests. The village level committees also stand constituted throughout the State for the purpose. These Committees have been provided kits for conducting the water tests in their areas, he added.
