Kapil Sharma insists on making CNWK a weekly?

23/10/2014

For some time now, Kapil Sharma has been at loggerheads with the broadcasters of his popular TV show. Trouble began when the stand-up comedian was signed to play the lead in a film being produced by a big studio. An upbeat Kapil told the channel that he wanted Comedy Nights With Kapil to become a weekly.
However, soon after, he was replaced by Riteish Deshmukh in the film, and the show continued with its biweekly run. But now that Kapil has accepted Abbas-Mustan's romcom, and has offers from David Dhawan and Kabir Khan, he has issued an ultimatum: Make the show a weekly or it will be a no-show for four months.
Outcome: From January 2015, the biweekly show will air only once a week.
Earlier, in an interview to Mirror (February 27), the actor had admitted to feeling the pressure: "Having a biweekly show is too much of pressure. Besides being the host, I am also the show's producer and involved with every creative aspect. So I can't let the quality fall." At the same time he had argued that to grow as an actor he needed to do films too which wouldn't be possible unless the show became a weekly.
So, how did he finally convince the channel to give in to his demands? A source close to the development reveals that he clearly told the broadcasters that if they did not toe the line he would stop shooting and the show would have to go off air for a while.
"Abbas-Mustan's film has gone on floors and Kapil needs to allot bulk dates for it. Also there are the two other offers that he needs to reflect on," says the source.
Mirror has also learnt that the creative directors of the show are planning to introduce some new characters from next year onwards. Some months ago, Sunil Grover who had quit to launch his own show returned as the much-loved Guthi. Now, the setting of Kapil's home, could change too. Anything to keep the TRPs from dipping!
