Jammu witnesses first ever International performance by Malaysian artists

Jammu: Jammu witnessed the first ever International performance by the artists of Malaysia here today at Police Auditorium, Jammu. Organised by Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India with the support of J&K Police, this programme by foreign artists mesmerized everyone through their highly professional performances. Divisional Commissioner Jammu Shantmanu IAS was the Chief Guest on the occasion whereas Rajesh Kumar IPS, Inspector General of Police, Jammu presided over the function.
Welcoming the august gathering, the Regional Director of ICCR Jammu, Balwant Thakur gave a detailed account of the activities initiated by ICCR in Jammu. After the inception of ICCR in Jammu, this is the fourth International Cultural group brought here for Jammuites, after the successful presentations by the countries like Zambia, Democratic Republic of Laos, and Poland. Balwant Thakur further informed that Indian Council for Cultural Relations is mandated to bring Nations together through cultural diplomacy, with the mission to take India to the world and world to India, the council organises series of cultural exchange programmes and the show of Malasiyan artists is one of them. Its objectives are to actively participate in the formulation and implementation of policies and programmes pertaining to India's external relations; to foster and strengthen cultural relations and mutual understanding between India and other countries; to promote cultural exchanges with other countries and people; and develop relations with national and international organisations in the field of culture. Today's programme featured ASWARA (National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage, Malaysia) which promotes local performances and is champion a Malaysian identity in traditional and contemporary dance. Building a good reputation through the years, this full-time professional company was established for outstanding graduates, and funded by Sime Darby Foundation since 2011. Aswara Dance Company is now a shining example of Malaysia's plurality embodied in its repertoire that transcends borders of race, religion and genres. Dancers are trained in multiple languages of all Malaysian traditional genres as well as ballet and contemporary techniques too. The company has performed at International dance festivals including Hong Kong Dance Teens, Dance XChange in the Philippines, Muara Festival and Contact in Singapore, World Islamic Economic Forum in Indonesia, Pondok Bantan and Our Roots Right Now in Thailand, as well as every major Malaysian dance festival. The company has received innumerable dance awards for performance and choreography especially through kakiseni's Boh Cameronian Arts Awards and the Ministry of Culture Awards. In 2011, the company was judged the Grand Jury Prize Winner of the Selangor Young Talent Award for performing arts.
