PDP does not have numbers to form Govt on its own: Mehbooba

25/01/2015

Jammu: Soon after her re-election as the PDP president for a tenure of three years, Mehbooba Mufti today said the party does not have a mandate to form the government in Jammu and Kashmir on its own.
"PDP doesn't not have such a mandate that we... stake our claim to form the government, we don't have that many numbers," she said while addressing party leaders here soon after her reelection as party president.
She said that it was the duty of every Indian citizen to protect the special status and the special position of Jammu and Kashmir.
"Jammu and Kashmir has been given special status in the Indian constitution due to its distinct identity at the time of its accession and it is the responsibility of entire nation to protect this status in the interest of people and country at large," she said.
"It is testing time for us. People, especially in Kashmir, have their own apprehension and are hesitantly looking at the political leadership of state and country," she added.
Mehbooba became the party president for the fourth consecutive term after MP Muzaffar Hussain Baig and Tariq Hussain Qarra proposed her name.
Terming Jammu and Kashmir issue as the byproduct of India's partition in 1947, the PDP president said, "The issue needs to be resolved for peace and tranquillity in the region".
She said people of Jammu and Kashmir have given a decisive verdict to initiate steps to bridge gap between Jammu and Kashmir regions.
"Character of the verdict might be looking different but one thing is clear that it is a mandate against corruption and nepotism. It is a decisive mandate because people of Kashmir Valley have overwhelmingly voted for PDP and people of Jammu have voted for BJP," she said.
She said that PDP would work assiduously to strengthen relations between different regions of Jammu and Kashmir and between people of Jammu and Kashmir and rest of the country.
"We will work as facilitator to normalise relations between India and Pakistan," she said.
"Verdict of 2014 assembly elections is against mis-rule of NC-Congress coalition which had crossed all limits of corruption, loot and nepotism," she said, adding that people of Jammu and Kashmir have taught a lesson to both NC and Congress for their misdeeds.
Expressing gratitude towards party workers for re-electing her as party president, she said it was matter of satisfaction that PDP has emerged as strong political force in the state as well as a credible voice of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
"The formation of the PDP in the year 1999 was a turning point in the history of Jammu and Kashmir. In a short span of time, PDP has earned credibility of the state's people. The party has emerged as the biggest political force of the state," she said.
However The Peoples Democratic Party in Kashmir re-elected Mehboob Mufti as the president here on Saturday.
"It is testing time for us. People, especially in Kashmir, have their own apprehension and are hesitantly looking at the political leadership of state and country,” Mehbooba said while addressing party leaders after being reelected as president for fourth consecutive term.
She said, “Jammu and Kashmir has been given special status in the Indian constitution due to its distinct identity at the time of its accession and it is the responsibility of entire nation to protect this status in the interest of people and country at large."

The elections, held under the chairmanship of lawmaker AR Veeri and observed by former lawmaker Ved Mahajan, concluded with voice vote in favour of Mehbooba.
