Slight respite from cold conditions in Valley

SRINAGAR, Feb 6: The minimum temperature in Srinagar and Kokernag rose more than a degree to settle above the freezing point even as a bright sunshine greeted Valley residents.
The mercury in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, went up over a degree from the previous night's minus 0.6 degree Celsius to record a low of 0.8 degree Celsius, an official of the MET department said here.
He said Kokernag town in south Kashmir registered a low of 1.2 degrees Celsius as compared to minus 0.3 degree Celsius the previous night.
The official said the mercury also increased in the famous ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir where it settled at minus 1.4 degrees Celsius up by nearly three notches from the previous night's minus 4 degrees Celsius.
He said Pahalgam hill resort in south, which serves as the base camp for the annual Amarnath yatra during summer, recorded a low of minus 3.3 degrees Celsius, down nearly three notches from the previous night's minus 0.5 degree Celsius.
The night temperature in Qazigund, the gateway town to Kashmir Valley, registered a low of minus 1.4 degrees Celsius, while the north Kashmir town of Kupwara recorded the minimum of minus 1.5 degrees Celsius, the official said.
The minimum temperature in Kargil town of Ladakh region marked slight improvement from the previous night's minus 9.4 degrees Celsius to record a low of minus 9 degrees Celsius.
The nearby Leh town, also in the cold desert of Ladakh, recorded a low of minus 9.9 degrees Celsius, same as that of the previous night, the official said.
He said Leh was the coldest recorded place in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Meteorological Department has said there is a possibility of light snowfall in the upper reaches at a few places like Gulmarg today.
"We are also expecting moderate rainfall or snow, especially in the higher reaches, between February 10 and 11, Director, Meteorological Department, Sonam Lotus said.
