Jammu, May 24: The Jammu and Kashmir unit of Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) on Saturday criticised the Union Territory government's new austerity order, terming it an "anti-youth and anti-employment" move, and demanded its immediate withdrawal.
Addressing a press conference here, the party's J&K chief, Manish Sahni, said the decision to treat government posts lying vacant for the last two years as "deemed abolished" amounted to a direct attack on the future of unemployed youth.
Sahni said Jammu and Kashmir was already among the regions facing high unemployment and, instead of creating fresh opportunities, the government had chosen to permanently eliminate vacant posts.
He termed the move a "cruel joke" on unemployed youth.
Citing official figures from the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), Sahni said while the national unemployment rate stood at 3.5 per cent, Jammu and Kashmir's unemployment rate had reached 6.7 per cent.
Despite the situation, he alleged, the government was adding to the frustration of job seekers by freezing fresh recruitment and abolishing vacant posts.
Referring to promises made during the Assembly elections, Sahni said the ruling party had assured one lakh government jobs to youth, but after assuming office had started surrendering already sanctioned posts instead of creating new employment avenues.
He termed the development a betrayal of educated youth.
The Shiv Sena leader further alleged that many posts remained vacant due to the failure of recruitment agencies to conduct timely recruitment processes and questioned why unemployed youth should bear the consequences of institutional shortcomings.
According to official employment department data, over 3.49 lakh educated youth are registered as unemployed in Jammu and Kashmir, he said, adding that the actual number could be much higher.
Demanding immediate withdrawal of the order, Sahni urged the government to begin recruitment against all vacant posts on a priority basis and warned that the party would launch a large-scale agitation if the decision was not rolled back.
