Samba, Dec 7: Krishi Vigyan Kendra Samba conducted Awareness programme on Stubble burning at Village Mawa, Razpura on 7 of December 2017 with the objective of educating farmer to stop stubble burning after harvesting of paddy and wheat crops. It was attended by 55 farmers. The programme was organised after the instructions of ICAR and under the guidance of Dr R K Arora, Associate Director Extension and I/c KVKs.
Dr Vinod Gupta, Senior Scientist & Incharge, KVK Samba in his address elaborated the objective of organising this programme and emphasised that Agricultural stubble millions of tonnes is burnt by farmers in northern India every October, triggering heavy pollution before the onset of winter. He said that Farmers set crop residue afire mainly because of cost concerns and the short gap between summer and winter crops. He advised farmers to avoid such practices to save beneficial micro-organisms in the soil.
Dr Jai Kapoor, Senior Agronomist strongly encouraged farmers to adopt conservation farming systems, including retaining crop stubble residues but also recognise that occasional, strategic burning of stubbles based upon sound agronomic principles can be a valid choice. He educated farmers that around 80 per cent of the C in standing stubble will return to the atmosphere as CO2in the short to medium term. Losses of carbon as CO2 to the atmosphere through burning are often only slightly greater than through natural decomposition, but they are of course immediate.
He related all these facts and encouraged farmers to skip stubble burning. Dr Neerja Sharma, SMS Horticu lture also deliberated on the importance of growing the high value crops during off season to fetch the higher prices for the farmers. She also narrated that stubble burning also affects the soil health and environment and directly and indirectly affecting vegetable production.
Vijaypal Choudhary, AEO Department of Agriculture along with his team of JAA,s also deliberated on the issue.
The other scientists present on the occasion was Dr Amit Mahajan who highlighted the importance of weed management in rabi crops.
