ICCR Jammu celebrates ‘World Culture Day’

Jammu, May 21: Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Jammu Ministry of External Affairs celebrated 'World Culture Day' with big fun-fare here today at ICCR Jammu headquarters. The programme featured the screening of a unique film 'Celebrating Diversity' showcasing the traditional dance diversity of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. At the very outset while welcoming the august gathering, Regional Director of ICCR Jammu & Kashmir Balwant Thakur informed that United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) adopted the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity in December 2002, the UN General Assembly, declared 21 May to be the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. The resolution states that ''Cultural diversity is a driving force of development, not only with respect to economic growth, but also as a means of leading a more fulfilling intellectual, emotional, moral and spiritual life. Cultural diversity is thus an asset that is indispensable for poverty reduction and the achievement of sustainable development. The day provides us with an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the values of cultural diversity and to advance the goals of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expression”.
To promote this vision of the celebration of this Inter national day ICCR Jammu chose to celebrate the cultural diversity of the state of J&K expressed through its varied dancing expressions.
The programme featured the variegated variety of colors, costumes, rhythms, stylistic movements, and cultural expressions expressed through the traditional dance forms of the state. Starting from Dogri the programme transported to a mesmerising journey of Kashmiri, Ladakhi, Gojri, Pahari, Bhadarwahi, and Balti dance traditions of the state. Each dance presentation despite being different from the other in rhythm and pace was artistically blended with each other so as to present their harmony and co-relation.
The programme culminated through the presentation of a mega performance 'Unity in diversity of J&K', exclusively designed and composed to portray the harmony and the cultural co-existence of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
