RAJOURI, Aug 13: Police constable Parvez Ahmad, killed in a gunfight with terrorists in Srinagar, was laid to rest today with full honours at his ancestral village in Rajauri district near here with a large number of people, including senior Army and police officers, attending his last rites braving incessant rains.
Ahmad's body reached his village Dhandote near Budhal town of the district around 3 pm from Srinagar and was laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard with full honours, a police official said.
A selection grade constable, Ahmad was killed yesterday while fighting militants during a raid on their suspected hideout in Batmaloo locality of central Srinagar.
A pall of gloom descended on the village and adjoining areas after the news of Ahmad's death spread and the people started assembling at his residence to join his funeral prayers.
The Special Operations Group personnel, Parvaiz Ahmed, died in a fierce encounter in Srinagar, but that couldn't kill the determination of his two minor sons - in fact, the incident has steeled up their grit. The brothers want to grow up as officers in security forces and smoke out terrorists.
"I want to be an officer like my father; I want to take revenge for his death. His sacrifice will bear fruit for Jammu and Kashmir," said Sahil. His younger son is eight years old. Ahmed laid down his life while countering a terrorist attack in Batmaloo area in Srinagar.
Ahmed’s father said, "I appeal to the state government to do justice to us. My son sacrificed his life for the country. There are children in the family and nobody is there to take care of them. I am old, I cannot look after them, there is no support for us without my son."
Ahmed's brother and uncle also made similar appeals, saying that all 11 members in their family were dependent on him, and appealed to the government to ensure that they were looked after well.
Senior officers, including Rajouri's Senior Superintendent of Police Yougal Manhas, Colonel T P Sharma, the Commanding Officer of 60 Rashtriya Rifles, Commandant Liaqat Chowdhary, the in-charge of the second battalion of Indian Reserve Police and Assistant Commissioner (Revenue) Abdul Quyoom Mir attended the funeral procession of the martyr and paid rich tributes to him, the official said.
He said Deputy Superintendent of Police (Operations) Sukhdev Singh, Manjakote's Sub-Divisional Police Officer Imtiyaz Ahmed and Budhal's Executive Magistrate Khursheed Tantray were also present on the occasion.
Thousands of people from the village and adjoining areas braved the incessant rains to attend the funeral prayers for the slain policeman, he said.
The official said the mourners also visited the bereaved family to express their solidarity with them.
