Parthenium Awareness Week observed at SKUAST-Jammu

JAMMU, Aug 16: AICRP-Weed Management, Divi sion of Agronomy, SKUAST-Jammu initiated Week long Parthenium Awareness campaign on 16th of August, 2018 which is being organized simultaneously on national level from 16-22 August, 2018 to create awareness and educate the people/farmers/students about the Parthenium menace and its management. On the opening day of "Parthenium Awareness Week" Dr. J. P. Sharma, Director Research and Dr. D. P Abrol, Dean Faculty of Agriculture, SKUAST Jammu graced the occasion by their benign presence and apprised the participants on aggressive and poisonous nature of Parthenium which have posed a serious threat to crops, human health and livestock health, biodiversity and aesthetic value of landscapes. Dr. B.C Sharma, Head, Division of Agronomy emphasized that its spread is not only confined to agriculture lands but also its spread is noticed in road sides, parks, school areas, pastures etc.
He further emphasized that community approach is the best possible way to get rid of the menace and can be effectly delt with by uprooting the Parthenium plants well before their flowering.
Dr. B. R. Bazaya, incharge AICRP Weed Management, delivered a talk to students and highlighted various harmful effects of Parthenium like hay fever, dermatitis, asthma, skin rashes, peeling skin, puffy eyes and eczema in human being through pollen. Dr R. Puniya, Junior Scientist, AICRP Weed Management explained about physical, herbicidal and biological methods of Parthenium control to the students. On this day a student rally was also organized in the campus carrying cards displaying slogan regarding awareness and control of parthenium. Both Director Research and Dean Faculty of Agriculture, along with team of scientist namely Dr. N. P. Thakur, Dr. Mahender Singh, Dr. Meenakshi Gupta, Dr. Vijay Bharti, Dr. Vijay Khajuria, Dr. Neetu Sharma and PG students of Agronomy Division and more than 120 UG students took part in uprooting of parthenium weed at FOA, Chatha. The campaign ended with vote of thanks by Dr. B. R. Bazaya Incharge AICRP Weed Management, SKUAST Jammu.
