Refresher course in Human Rights Concludes

Jammu, Dec 10: The three weeks interdisciplinary refresher course in Human Rights which had begun on 19th of November culminated today at University of Jammu on the occasion of the International Human Rights Day. The course was conducted by the UGC- Human Resource Development Centre and P.G. Department of Home Science (Human Development). 47 college and university faculty members of not only Jammu & Kashmir but also Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal and Kerela participated in the course.
Speaking on the occasion the Chief Guest Sh. Dilbagh Singh, DGP, J&K congratulated the University for organizing a refresher course on a topic which holds special relevance in todays world. He was of the view that human beings are the ones who violate human rights. Others species in our environment including animals and birds do not violate the rights. Once an individual understands his own rights then, he will appreciate the rights of others as well. Further, he said that 'we not only have rights but certain duties especially those towards our nation and mother nature.'DGP appreciated the role of HRDC, JU for sensitizing the teachers in Higher Education on the subject of Human Rights. DGP said the J&K police is committed to the protection of the Human Rights. " It is good to observe that the institutions like higher learning like JU accords deep respect to the working of the security forces, particularly the J&K police in the state."
Guest of Honour Dr. Meenakshi Kilam, Registrar, JU said that through courses like these that we are creating brand ambassador for safe guarding human rights. She applauded the organizers for covering themes like rights of transgenders, disabled, which are often overlooked. She appreciated the role police, as they are the primary protectors of rights.
Earlier, in the program the course coordinator Dr. Samridhi Arora (Associate Prof) presented an overview of the activities and lectures delivered during the duration of the course. Some of the main themes covered included Child rights, Women rights, Disability Rights, Intellectual Property Right, Rights of the marginalized, Rights of Senior Citizens and gender justice, border migrants and Human rights, media and Human Rights, Consumer rights, environmental laws and rights, and transgender rights. Some of the prominent speakers and resource persons include Prof Vijay Nagpal (Chandigarh University), Prof Kusam Lata Malik (Delhi University), Prof. Bharati (National Law University, Delhi) Mx. Dhananjay Chauhan (trans-gender social activist from Chandigarh), Prof. Rajinder Kachroo (Aman Foundation), Prof. Deepsikha Kotwal (CUJ), Prof. Kulwant Singh (JU), Prof. Arvind Jasrotia (JU), Prof. Vishwa Raksha (JU); Sr. Advocates Mr.Sheikh Shakeel Ahmed, Ms. Mandeep Kaur, and Jyoti Sharma; from social organizations and NGOs, Ms. Purnima (Women Helpline), Ms. Manjri (Childline India foundation), Mr. Rajiv Khajuria ( NDF), and Mr. Danyal Khan( Piramal Founda-tion). Director HRDC Prof. J.P.S. Joorel shared with the audience the working of the centre and mentioned that the centre is dedicated towards running quality courses which are of utility to the participants. He mentioned that by educating the youth about their social responsibility we can safe guard humanity.
Dr. Sarika Manhas (Associate Prof.) and course co-coordinator welcomed the guests and apprised the audience about the relevance of the refresher course in developing sensitivity towards human rights. The formal vote of thanks was presented by Mr. Ranjeet Kalra, Faculty HRDC, University of Jammu. The proceedings of the day were conducted by Ms. Sanya Khan, Research Scholar, Department of Home Science, University of Jammu. The entire refresher course was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Samridhi Arora and Dr. Sarika Manhas in the Department of Home Science.
