Virat Kohli gives away easy singles to batsmen like all modern captains: Ian Chappell

NEW DELHI, DEC 12:
Former Australia captain Ian Chappell has an interesting take on Virat Kohli's leadership skills.Kohli's captaincy in Test cricket has often been criticised as he has been guilty of chasing the ball and not making the correct bowling changes in the past.
But Chappell thinks it's not just Kohli who makes these mistakes.
"I think Kohli is a good captain. Like all modern captains he sets deep fielders too often. He gives easy singles to batsmen. If you give good batsmen easy singles early in their innings you can quite often pay a hefty price for that," Chappell told ESPNCricinfo.
Kohli led India to a 31-run win over Australia in the first Test to become the first-ever Indian captain to help the visitors take a 1-0 lead on an Australian tour.
The historic win - India's first Down Under since Anil Kumble-led team's victory at Perth in 2007-08 - also meant Kohli became the first Asian captain to win Tests in South Africa, England and Australia. The top-ranked Test side also became the first team from Asia to win Tests in South Africa, England, and Australia in the same calendar year.Kohli's counterpart, Tim Paine on the other hand, has had to deal with a lot of criticism following another disappointing performance by his team. Australia have lost three of the four Tests that Paine has led them in since Steve Smith's ban for ball-tampering started in March this year.
But the critics have not just slammed Australia for the defeats but also for their attitude on the field after Paine pledged that his team will be better behaved. They haven't shown the same kind of aggression that Aussies are known for nor have there been any mind games or war of words with the opposition in the past few months. With Smith and David Warner serving their bans for ball-tampering, Paine's team has had little to celebrate and even less inclination to indulge in chest-thumping aggression. Defeat does little to lift the spirits, and Australia have lost a string of series across formats since the Newlands scandal.
