20/03/2019

In a good news for the MD aspirants in Jammu region, the seats of Post Graduate Degree Courses in Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu has been increased from 140 to 173 from the academic session 2019-20. The PG seats have been increased in lieu of surrender of concerned Diploma seats. While GMC Jammu got 100 percent conversion of Diploma seats the conversion of Diploma seats, into PG seats in GMC Srinagar is only 44.4 percent. Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare about seven months back issued a notification giving a one-time chance to Medical Colleges to convert their PG Diploma seats into PG Degree seats.
Accordingly, GMC Jammu surrendered all its 33 PG Diploma seats including 3 seats of Diploma in Obstetrics &Gynaecology (DGO) and 6 seats each of Diploma in Child Health (DCH), Diploma in Orthopaedics (D Ortho), Diploma in Radio Diagnosis (DMRD), Diploma in Anaesthesia (DA) and Diploma in Clinical Pathology (DCP). Similarly, GMC Srinagar also surrendered 18 Diploma seats including 12 of DGO and 8 of DA. Following this Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on February 13, 2019 de- notified these seats of GMC Jammu and GMC Srinagar. Consequent upon this, Medical Council of India after recommendations of PG Expert Group (BOG) and taking into account teacher-student ratio, approved increase of 33 Diploma seats into PG seats in GMC Jammu while in GMC Srinagar, against 18 surrendered Diploma seats, only eight were converted into PG seats (2 of DGO and 6 of DA). With conversion of 33 Diploma seats into PG seats, the total pool of existing Post Graduate Degree (MD/MS) courses of GMC Jammu has increased from 140 to 173. These enhanced PG seats will go a long way to support even the upcoming new Medical Colleges and the parent institutions as
well as the Health Department in providing specialized services.
