Samoon launches PPR, FMD Vaccination drive in Ganderbal

GANDERBAL, NOV 30: Principal Secretary, Animal, Sheep Husbandry, Fisheries and Transport Department, Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon today launched a massive vaccination drive against PPR (also known as Sheep and Goat Plague) and Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in sheep and goats at District Laboratory Haripora, Ganderbal.
Director, Sheep husbandry, Dr Ab Salam, District Sheep Husbandry Officer, K L Kakroo, Veterinarian Assistant Surgeons and other officials of the department were also present on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Samoon said that a massive vaccination drive against PPR and FMD is being started throughout the Valley to minimise the incidence of these diseases. He said the vaccination drive will help in preventing the disease found among sheep and goat and help families whose livelihood rely heavily on products like goat milk, mutton and wool.
After launching the drive, Dr Samoon interacted with the local breeders and urged them to make full use of the opportunity and extend their full cooperation to achieve the target of vaccinating every sheep and goat to eradicate PPR and FMD.
Later, Principal Secretary visited Sheep Breeding Farm at Goabal Kangan where he reviewed its functioning and inspected the infrastructure. He was informed that more than 500 livestock are available in the farm including various breeds of sheep like Australian Marino Breed and Suwarna Marine.
During the visit, Dr Samoon said that the main purpose of this breeding farm is to produce high-quality sheep breeds which give twins and triplets half yearly so that the private farmers get maximum benefits from these breeds and their socio-economic status is upgraded. He further said that Rams are also available in the farm for breeding purposes which are given to the farmers for breeding.
He stressed on the officials for putting extra efforts for the development of sheep and goat sector as the department has a major role in the development of small ruminants' sector. He asked the departmental functionaries to manage these farms on modern scientific lines so that they serve as a role model for the private breeders.
