Protecting them selves

30/03/2020

Doctors play important roles in our lives, no matter our ages, cultural backgrounds or medical needs. They ask us to do what is right for our health and the health of our loved ones. They help us when we are hurt or have fallen ill. They comfort us when we are scared and not at our best. And most importantly, doctors talk with us about how we can preserve our most valuable resource–our good health. It’s a long road to become a doctor, but the many years of intensive education, training, and continuing education to understand the latest findings in medical science benefit us all. Special people answer this call and take on the tremendous responsibility that goes with it, and the truth is we need more of them to meet the growing health needs of our communities.
As J&K reports is second Novel Coronavirus death, the health workers across Jammu province are working in an atmosphere of fear as despite being frontline workers they are not getting protective gears including masks, gloves, eyes protection, gowns and hand sanitizers to protect themselves from getting infected with Novel Coronavirus and five more people test positive in Kashmir including two from Srinagar, two from Budgam and one from Baramulla. It’s crucial for health care workers, doctors and nurses on the frontline of the disease to have the proper protective gear to lower the risk of contracting COVID-19 but due to short supply, many front health line workers are not getting the same. A surgical mask becomes unsafe to wear beyond 4 hours while an N-95 mask can be worn up to 8 hours but many doctors and paramedics alleged that they are being asked by the authorities to re-use the masks as they have no adequate stock. No doctor or nurse will want to treat a patient, knowing that he/she is not fully protected but risking their lives they are still performing their duties even some times in double shift but authorities are not even providing them proper transport facilities. Hospitals don’t have enough masks; doctors and paramedical staff are wearing a single mask all day, cleaning them at home, and sewing their own protective gear.
Meanwhile, several people from the Union Territory of J&K remained stranded in different States of the country including New Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan etc and were sending distress calls to the UT Government for their evacuation to the home towns as lockdown entered into sixth day today. The J&K Government should take initiative with the State Governments to arrange our evacuation so that we can reach our houses and unite with our families. Amid the ongoing lockdown to prevent the spread of Coronavirus, hundreds of stranded people from different parts in Jammu have also appealed to the UT administration to arrange transport facilities, saying they feel more vulnerable in the absence of proper arrangements.
