India Celebrates World Culture Day in Johannesburg

JAMMU, MAY 23: World Culture Day was celebrated here today by the Consulate General of India, Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center Johannesburg with the presentation of a 'Flute Recital' online showcasing the eminent South Indian flutist Seelan Pillay. The programme commenced with the opening remarks by the Consul General Ms Anju Ranjan who spoke at length about the significance of holding World Culture Day. Giving details she said that in 2001 UNESCO adapted the universal declaration on Cultural Diversity and in 2002 UN General Assembly declared it as a World Culture day recognizing the potential of Culture as a means of prosperity sustainable development and global peaceful coexistence. Cultural diversity is a driving force of development, not only with respect to economic growth, but also as a means of leading a more fulfilling intellectual, emotional, moral and spiritual life. Referring to India Ms Anju Ranjan said that India is among the most diverse societies with a plurality and diversity of cultures which marks it out as perhaps the largest multicultural society in the world. The multi cultural and multi religious character of Indian society is deeply rooted in the history since ages. If compared there is hardly any Culture in the world which is that varied as India's.
The variegated variety of Indian customs, traditions, food, geography has amazed the world. The Indian culture has never been rigid and that's why it's surviving with pride in the modern era.
This followed a mesmerizing flute recital by Seelan Pillay who impressed thousands of online viewers through his soulful performance. Seelan Pillay was accompanied on Mirdangam by Sashen Lingham. The programme was ably conducted by Ms Maya Bhat the teacher of Indian Culture in the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center. The entire presentation was conceived by Balwant Thakur Director of Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center, Johannesburg.
