2 militants killed in Budgam encounter

SRINAGAR, Oct 28: Two unidentified militants were killed by security forces in an encounter that broke out on Tuesday night in Budgam district, police said.
Security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation at Moachwah in Chadoora area of Budgam district around 7 pm on Tuesday following information about the presence of militants there, a police official said.
He said the search operation turned into an encounter around 9 pm after militants opened fire at security forces positions.
Two militants were killed in the gunbattle, which lasted nearly four hours.
The identity and group affiliation of the slain militants was being ascertained, the official said, adding preliminary investigation suggests that one of the slain ultras was a foreigner.
On a specific input regarding presence of terrorists in Mouchwa area of Budgam, a joint cordon and search operation was launched yesterday evening by Srinagar Police, Budgam Police, 50RR and CRPF in the said area.
During the search operation, as the presence of terrorists got ascertained they were given opportunity to surrender, however, they fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party, which was retaliated leading to an encounter.
In the ensuing encounter, two terrorists were killed and due to darkness the operation was suspended, however the whole area was put under strict cordon. In the wee hours, search operation was resumed and bodies of both the killed terrorists were retrieved from the site of encounter. One of the killed terrorists has been identified as Javaid Ahmad Ganie resident of Pulwama and as per reliable sources, the other killed terrorist has been identified as Khalid @Ilyas, a Pakistani national. Both the terrorists were affiliated with proscribed terrorist outfit JeM.
Incriminating materials including arms & ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other terror crimes.
The dead bodies of the killed terrorists shall be sent to Handwara for burial after completion of all medico-legal formalities. The nearest family members of the identified killed local terrorist shall be allowed to participate in the last rites at Handwara.
In this connection a case under relevant sections of law has been registered and investigation has been initiated.
People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials, if any.
