Bollywood actress Somy Ali, who left the Hindi film industry, two decades ago, is based in Miami, US now.
Somy did many films with Bollywood star Salman Khan and also acted with Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Govinda and Saif Ali Khan in a few films.
In an informal chat, the actress shares how she has been coping with the pandemic and what does she like about Indian cinema.
Somy said, "I do a lot of social work here in US and the last entire year, I worked on many domestic violence issues in my city.
In the past one year I have learnt that life is unpredictable and we have little control over how we plan our present and future. I believe in the popular quote, 'Man proposes and God disposes'.
It falls true for the situation we all are facing right now due to the pandemic. These are tough times for all and we can only hope that things turn to normal soon."
For someone who briefly did Bollywood films and then left India, ask her if she has continued watching Hindi films, and she said, "I prefer watching documentaries and biographies. I am not a fan of mainstream cinema.
But, I love watching any Hindi film with Taapsee Pannu, Nandita Das, Shabana Azmi, Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut and Aamir Khan. I know their films will have a message and significant depth."
Somy added, "I like meaningful films better than any other genre. The Lunch Box, Thappad, Pink, Arth, Mandi, Fashion and Anand are some of my favourite Hindi films."
