It was my dream to play a cricketer onscreen: Titeeksha Tawde

20/01/2022

Titeeksha Tawde, who became a household name with the Marathi show Saraswati, is all set to play the role of a professional cricketer in director Srijit Mukerji’s Shabaash Mithu, which is based on the life of Indian cricketer Mithali Raj. The film features Taapsee Pannu in the lead.
Talking about how she bagged the project, Titeeksha says, “I first auditioned for this film in March 2020, but due to the outbreak of coronavirus, everything came to a halt at that time.
In August 2020 again, I came across a post on social media with regards to the auditions for the film. I sent my audition video for the second time, but a few months went by and I didn’t hear anything from the makers. I thought the role must’ve gone to someone else.
Luckily, in January 2021, a friend of mine who was a part of the production’s team told me to audition again. I did, and this time, I was taken on board.”
Not many know that Titeeksha was a state-level cricket player before she made it to showbiz. “I started playing cricket in school at the age of 10. I even represented Chandrakant Patkar Vidyalaya at state-level tournaments (under 18),”she says, adding, “I would strive to be a medium pacer, but my coach in school used to say that I might do better as a spinner. Coincidentally, I am playing a medium pacer in the film.
The makers figured out that I am well-versed with cricket, during the auditions. In fact, I shot my audition video on an actual cricket pitch. Soon after my selection, I joined a cricket academy on my own to brush up my cricketing skills, even before our formal training for the film began.”
Recalling the shooting experience amidst the pandemic, Titeeksha says, “After restrictions on shooting post the COVID-19 second wave, I was worried if I would ever be able to see myself playing a cricketer on the big screen.
There was a lot of uncertainty. But I was relieved when we finally resumed shooting in September and wrapped up in November.
It has been my dream to play the role of a cricketer on the big screen. I portray a fictitious character in the film, but I was initially supposed to essay the role of former cricketer Nooshin Al Khadeer, who was also our coach during the shoot.”
About working with Taapsee, the actress says, “Taapsee is an extremely hardworking actor. She used to keep the atmosphere so lively. We bonded really well during the shoot.”
